Personal Interests

  • Dr. Yu’s adores spending time with his beautiful wife and children. His personal interests include outdoors activities, playing the guitar, martial arts, dancing, and event planning.

Biography

Dr. Yu is a native Virginian. He received his B.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), attended medical school at Ross University, and then completed his residency at VCU. Dr. Yu was Chief Resident and a recipient of the Renaissance Award for Excellence in recognition of all seven medical tasks of the Trivium-Quadrivium and the Family Medicine Resident Award for Scholarship from the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and the North American Primary Care Research Group.

Afterwards, he completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at VCU. His Sports Medicine experience include: examining and caring for athletes, covering the training room or working the sidelines/games/events for the Washington Redskins, NFL Combine, Washington Nationals at Spring Training, Potomac Nationals, LPGA Championship at Kingsmill, George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Marine Corp Marathon, Army 10 Miler, Reston Triathlon, A10 Track and Field Championship, A10 Men’s Soccer Championship, CAA Women’s Basketball Championship, Special Olympics, Washington Ballet, DC Divas, Skatefest, and local high schools. He has also provided sports physicals for athletes at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Catholic University, and Marymount University.

Dr. Yu leads an annual medical mission to Ghana providing care for hundreds of patients in remote villages and his research was accepted at the World Organization of Family Doctors Africa Conference. He also volunteered at the White House Summit on Asian American and Pacific Islanders, completed a Federal Health Policy Internship at the United States Department of Health and Human Services-Health Resources and Services Administration, and has presented and taught at national conferences.

Locally Dr. Yu has been a physician leader for community health fairs, volunteered in emergency medical services, was an advocacy council member for the Medical Society of Virginia, and continues to enjoy teaching medical students and residents.

A patient-centered medical home is a model of care where each patient has an ongoing relationship with a personal physician who leads a team responsible for that patient's care.
